The Last Time We Met

TouchingLives

I know well enough that this image — fixed forever in my mind is not you, but the shadow of love which exists in me...and although I know this, I then think that without you, without the rare excuse you gave me, my love, now a tenderness, today would be there within, sleeping still and lying in hope... then I thank you.

—Luis Cernuda

A million light years and a million more would not give time enough to store that small second of eternity when I took you in my arms and you took me into yours.

—Jacques Prevert

All these words are just a front. What I would really like to do is chain you to my body, then sing for days and days and days.

—Hafiz

The Last Time We Met

How could I have told you

the first time we met,

that you,

had preceded you.

Your smile

seen through wavy hair

your eyes

through tender heart—

Had reached me—

before we ever touched.

Your question brought us closer.

My feebleness,

dampened heart.

Then in the sign

of three times seven—

you, physically reappeared.

How could I have told you,

the first time we met,

that our souls,

had already kissed?

I pray this poem will do.
