Poems Of Wisdom

Sophia

is having gained knowledge, experience, and intuitive understanding, along with a capacity to apply these well. It is the judicious application of knowledge. To some extent the terms wisdom and
intelligence
have similar and overlapping meanings.

If I have any wisdom, it has come from two sources — life and poetry. There is an old Chinese saying "When one has too much trouble, one writes poetry. There are two kinds of poetry; in one you jump in, in the other, you jump out. If you jump out you become a philosopher. If you jump in you die with the poem." The poems in this collection are some of my favorite and include both of the above mentioned situations.

The poem comes in the form of a blessing, like the rapture breaking through on the mind.

—Stanley Kunitz

We should read poetry the way we listen to great music, for the impression it leaves, and not for a desire to literally understand it note by note, or word by word.

—John Ashbery
